Educating the Developing Mind: The View from Cognitive Psychology

Claim: A model based on cognitive theories of mental action, rather than neuroscientific evidence is the correct approach for educators.

Data: This model has been proposed by three top social psychologists;
-Demetriou
-Spanoudis
-Mouyi

Warrant: All three need to check the consistency of their own theory with a program simulation, with very little information in it, and see how the test subject grew up.

Backing: If multiple tests were ran with blank subjects and all grew up to have similar results, the theory would be proven.

Reservation: It is unlikely and inhumane to have human lives be tests.

Qualifier: Whether they do or they do not improve their thinking, our thinking about thinking will be more advanced.

Blog Due 4/2

Out of the four metagenres in Carter's article, I think the one that best fits my discipline is "Responses to Academic Situations that Call for Empirical Inquiry". I think this one is the best for my discipline because it is very similar to my career area of interest. Psychology is already all about testing hypothesis about human behavior through observations and specific data collection and eventually making credible conclusions about them. Using the empirical inquiry metagenre will be very similar to what Psychologists already do, which will be helpful in thinking like a Psychologist that is needed for our third writing assignment. In the article, Carter states that this form of metagenre is the best used in the social and natural sciences. Using the empirical inquiry metagenre in my discipline I would identify questions at interest in the field of Psychology, create and test hypothesis by gathering information based on observations, and drawing conclusions from it. By doing so, I would be able to compare my thoughts about a specific behavior and check my ideas with a sample size of a desired population. By using this learning tool, I would be able to define a problem in my discipline that will lead me to investigate further to come up with possible solutions to the problem.
